"Don’t leave those suffering behind "

The department of Palliative Care at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Center, Jaipur conducted one month palliative awareness programmes. In keeping with this year’s theme-“Universal Health Coverage-Don’t leave those suffering behind "-Awareness and training programmes were conducted in our institute and colleges in the city. All the nurses in the hospital were educated in the basics of pain management, basics of palliative care and Communication Skills by Dr. Vinita Jain, Dr. Manisha Hemrajani & Ms. Arati Hota.

Approximately 300 postgraduate students were addressed by Dr. Anjum Khan Joad and Ms. Arati Hota. Students from diverse backgrounds- Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Commerce & Sciences were introduced to the concepts of palliative care and the role of community in palliative care. All the attendants/families of patients visiting the hospital as inpatients or outpatients were addressed by the senior nurses of the wards and outpatient departments lead by Mrs. Dona Jose, Nursing Superintendent through AV aids. The nurses did a commendable job in elaborating on “What is palliative Care?” “How I can help my loved one?”

In order to motivate each other, i.e all the” friends “of palliative care in the city, we organized a movie screening “HIPPOCRATIC” for volunteers, doctors, staff and nursing students of BMCHRC College of nursing. This wonderful movie inspired everyone to work harder for this worth cause.

One step to sensitize the national community about the need of morphine and the gravity of the problem Dr. Anjum Khan Joad tweeted “Morphine : “Made in India” but less than 2% Indians have access to it “ to our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. We also participated in different TV (Doordarshan -swasth desh) & Radio channels about palliative care. In all about 1000 people were touched by our hospital team.
